Narrowing the Gaps Ltd is a school improvement consultancy with a focus on supporting schools - via practical and engaging INSET - to reduce attainment inequalities between different groups of learners, especially pupils in receipt of Free School Meals.
Our education system does not work well for many pupils from low income families. On average, gaps in attainment between children eligible for free school meals and their peers appear at age 22 months and get wider with each year spent in school. By the time they reach the age of 16, eligible pupils are significantly less likely than their peers to reach any of the recognised KS4 threshold measures. Pupils attending private schools are 55 times more likely to win a place at Oxford or Cambridge than pupils eligible for free school meals.
We are here to help school leaders and teachers who are interested in narrowing the gaps. As educators, there are things that we can do to address these fundamental social inequalities. A first step for your school may well be some highly practical INSET.
