Enhancing Narrow Gaps Pedagogy

The Narrowing the Gaps Pedagogy Project is a unique teaching and learning project aimed at supporting teachers teachers to narrow attainment gaps through enhanced classroom practice.

Whilst there are many effective interventions that help schools close the gaps, a relentless focus on Inclusive Quality First Teaching (or Narrow Gap Teaching) is likely to yield the greatest - and often most cost effective - impact.

Our definition of Inclusive Quality First Teaching is drawn from the growing evidence base about what accelerates progress for disadvantaged learners, namely teaching that fosters the following five learning behaviours:-

maximum participation;
engagement in appropriate challenge;

the inculcation of thinking skills and meta-cognition; and

Outstanding INSET for your School

Many schools book an introductory session (usually a whole day, whole staff INSET session) for teachers to be introduced to the principles and practicalities of narrow gap teaching and learning. This session is delivered by Jake Mansell, Director of Narrowing the Gaps Ltd. Jake has worked with schools (primary and secondary), local authorities, academy chains and conference organisers across the country and also delivers the NUT's national CPD course on Narrowing the Gaps.

If you would like to book an introductory session to be delivered at your school please contact Jake Mansell via email on with your name, role, school, estimated number of participating teachers and any available dates in your INSET calendar. The session is extremely engaging, challenging, practical and inspiring - and is therefore very popular - so please book well in advance. You can read some testimonials from session participants here.

You can see some of the teaching and learning strategies covered in the session, and reflective feedback from teachers who have used them at the Narrowing the Gaps Pedagogy Project website at
