narrowing the gaps
Narrowing the Gaps Ltd is a school improvement consultancy with a focus on supporting schools to reduce attainment inequalities between different groups of learners, especially pupils in receipt of Free School Meals (FSM).

It is a sad fact that our education system does not work well for many poorer pupils. Gaps in attainment between children eligible for free school meals and those who are not eligible appear at around 22 months and get wider with each year spent in the system.

By the time they reach the age of 16, FSM pupils are only half as likely to reach the threshold of 5 GCSE A*-C including English and maths as their non-FSM peers.

Pupils attending private schools are 55 times more likely to win a place at Oxford or Cambridge than pupils eligible for free school meals. Shockingly, most years some individual private schools send more pupils to Oxbridge than the entire national cohort of pupils who were eligible for free school meals.

This site is for school leaders and teachers who are interested in narrowing the gaps. As educators, there are things that we can do to address this fundamental social inequality.

If you are a teacher or school leader you may want to jump straight in and start making a difference immediately by visiting our sister site, the Narrowing the Gaps Pedagogy Project.
